Geneina - Park in Arabic is a public open space serving the low-income community of Masaken Othman, a deprived pubic housing project remotely located on the periphery of 6th October City, Greater Cairo Region. Relocated families from Syria and Sudan make up a substantial part of the area’s diverse resident demography. Geneina aims to address the complex social tensions existing between the diverse and distressed inhabitants through a communal node for children of all ages and nationalities to actively play; and for women to interact openly and safely. This simple, small-scale community park made up of age and gender-sensitive play zones, a small open theatre for cultural expression, and a seating area for women was designed and implemented through the valuable input of the area’s residents to inspire mutual acceptance between the regugee and local communities.
